Can you give an effective compliment? Simply stating a compliment such as "You did a good job" is sometimes perceived as insincere. A simply stated compliment like this one, can often leave the recipient feeling awkward. Have you ever experienced that awkward silence after a compliment?
An effective compliment, on the other hand, can lead to a boost of overall moral.
Here are three steps you can take toward giving an effective compliment:
State the compliment
("I appreciate you always being so punctual.")
Justify compliment
("By you being here on time, it makes it easy for us to start on time.")
Ask a follow up question
("What's your secret to always being on time, especially having three 3 little kids?")
Use these three steps when complimenting and notice how the recipient responds. He/she will take the compliment as sincere and by asking a question, it can even lead to a meaningful conversation.
Have fun complimenting!
